MMEA to summon owner, family members as search for missing ship enters Day 18

KUALA LUMPUR – The owner and family members of the crewmen of the missing cargo ship MV Dai Cat 06 will be summoned to assist in the investigation, said Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som.

“MMEA will open an inquiry paper and call the ship’s owner, its agent, and family members of its crewmen to answer some questions about the vessel’s disappearance.

“Among the things that will be asked is the ship’s safety before sailing, the crew’s welfare and why the disappearance was only reported on January 9 when it was supposed to have arrived in Kuching on December 31,” he told reporters here today.

On January 9, the Malaysian-registered cargo vessel, carrying pipe rods valued at RM726,205 was reported missing in Indonesian waters, and a police report was lodged by the ship’s agent on the same day.

The search operation for the missing cargo ship, coordinated by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, was called off on January 14 after no new clues were found.

Zubil also said the initial investigation found that the ship, which was a sand vessel, was carrying pipe rods when it went missing. – Bernama, January 18, 2023
