Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau has criticized Dr. Akmal Saleh's exaggerated response to the "Allah" socks controversy, sarcastically suggesting that Akmal should demand an apology from China over the issue.
Tangau highlighted the disproportionate nature of Akmal's campaign for a nationwide boycott of KK Mart and urged him to focus on more constructive actions, such as engaging with China's ambassador to Malaysia.
In response to Akmal's calls for drastic measures against KK Mart, Tangau emphasized the importance of acknowledging the company's prompt removal of the controversial products and its apologies. He questioned why negligence was being interpreted as malice and why there were demands for the closure of KK Mart and its supplier, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd.
Tangau pointed out the absurdity of justifying disproportionate actions in the name of religion and suggested that if Akmal truly believed in seeking justice, he should press Malaysia's foreign minister to summon China's ambassador and seek an explanation. However, he acknowledged the economic implications of such actions, considering China's significant involvement in Malaysia's economy, from infrastructure projects like the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) to developments like Forest City in Johor.
Highlighting the potential economic repercussions of the KK Mart controversy, Tangau warned against actions that could deter investors from Malaysia. He cautioned that imposing severe penalties for negligence could deter both foreign and domestic investors, leading to capital flight and economic instability.
Tangau also emphasized the need for Sabah and Sarawak to differentiate themselves from Peninsular Malaysia by cultivating a reputation for reasonableness, stability, and inclusivity. He proposed branding the Bornean states as the "Other Malaysia" and positioning them as attractive investment destinations known for their openness and moderation.
Despite acknowledging the challenges faced by Sabah and Sarawak in terms of infrastructure and human resources, Tangau expressed confidence in their ability to attract investors through their demonstrated values of compassion, respect, and trust. He called upon Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg to recognize both the challenges and opportunities presented by the current situation and to act accordingly.
