Moderate earthquakes hit Indonesia and Philippines, no tsunami threat to Malaysia

Two moderate earthquakes struck Indonesia and the Philippines this morning, with magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.1, but pose no tsunami risk to Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two moderate earthquakes struck Indonesia and the Philippines this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported a 5.5-magnitude quake in the Banda Sea, Indonesia, at 11.05 am.

It occurred at a depth of 103 kilometres, about 398 kilometres southeast of Ambon.

An earlier 5.1-magnitude tremor hit the Philippine Islands region at 10.56 am.

That quake was centred at a depth of 65 kilometres, approximately 136 kilometres northeast of Talaud Island, Indonesia.

MetMalaysia confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia from either seismic event. – Bernama
