MOE: Flood-affected students can attend school without full uniform

IN a bid to support students impacted by recent flooding, the Education Ministry (MOE) has granted permission for affected students to attend school without full uniform attire.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the policy change, explaining that the move is designed to reduce the burden on families during this challenging time and ensure students can continue their education.

"Some children attended lessons at the temporary evacuation centres (PPS) without proper uniforms because they had no time to bring them when evacuating," Fadhlina explained.

"Continuous rain may prevent uniforms from drying in time, so we have decided to allow students to attend school without the proper attire. However, we still expect students to wear attire that is appropriate for school," she added.

Fadhlina made the comments during a press briefing following her visit to the SK Kencana PPS in Simpang Renggam today, where she was accompanied by state executive councillor for information and education, Aznan Tamin, and Education Director-General Datuk Azman Adnan.

The Education Minister also addressed the safety of teachers affected by the floods, revealing that the MOE is actively monitoring the situation for educators living and working in flood-stricken areas.

"We have instructed the Johor State Education Department to ensure that the wellbeing of teachers is looked after," she said. "Yesterday, we received a complaint about a teacher who was stranded at the school due to flooding."

In another incident, 39 flood victims, including teachers and female students from SK Tampoi Utama, were relocated to a PPS this morning after being trapped for over 10 hours due to rising floodwaters.

The victims, including a pregnant teacher, initially refused to leave the school premises following the midday session yesterday due to concerns over safety.

The MOE’s measures reflect its commitment to supporting both students and educators in the wake of the devastating floods, ensuring that their education and safety are not compromised during this difficult period. – March 21, 2025
