The Education Ministry is preparing for a significant surge in Year One enrolment from six-year-olds next year, with online registration opening this month
NIBONG TEBAL: The Ministry of Education is making full preparations to handle the admission of six-year-olds into Year One starting next year. Minister Fadhlina Sidek said online registration will open on Feb 15.
She said early feedback indicates a significant expected surge in pupil intake, particularly in urban areas. “Our preparations are at the highest level, although we do not know for sure the number of pupils who will be enrolling,” she stated.
Fadhlina was commenting on preparations for the 2027 school session after officiating a programme here today. The ministry’s current focus is on mapping areas and schools to identify facilities and class capacity.
“We expect, especially in urban areas, to receive more admissions of Year 1 students aged six than usual,” she added. She said urban areas are anticipated to welcome the policy change from parents.
To meet the expected demand, the ministry will optimise the use of existing classrooms. It will also add new classrooms using the faster industrialised building system (IBS).
Fadhlina confirmed the ministry will also recruit 20,000 teachers as required. She said the provision of facilities and teacher recruitment are being carried out diligently to ensure a smooth admission process.
