JOHOR BARU – The Health Ministry has vowed to send more doctors and nurses to Johor to tackle medical staff shortages, especially at its two main hospitals, said the state’s health executive councillor.
Ling Tian Soon said the ministry announced this after its management paid visits to Sultanah Aminah Hospital and Sultan Ismail Hospital yesterday.
He said Johor is short of about 2,800 medical staff, especially doctors and nurses, halting operations of two wards at the latter.
Ling said discussions with the ministry were positive and that it would try to help Johor boost its medical staff numbers, especially at the two hospitals.
He was speaking at a press conference after attending Johor’s International Nurses Day celebration at the Persada Convention Centre Johor, here today. Also present to officiate at the event was Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Onn Hafiz said his government was committed to solving the staff shortages – as one of the legacy issues he aimed to sort out, besides congestion at the country’s gateways and road repairs.
Yesterday, the menteri besar posted on Facebook urging Putrajaya to help address Johor’s medical staff shortage promptly.
Earlier, in conjunction with the International Nurses Day event, Onn Hafiz also announced an allocation amounting to RM200,000 for more than 8,000 nurses in the state. – Bernama, June 1, 2023
