MOH seizes RM405k worth of illegally sold weight-loss drugs

THE Ministry of Health (MOH) has seized 759 units of illegally marketed medicines worth RM405,170 in 19 enforcement raids since 2025 up to September this year, amid concerns over the unauthorised sale of drugs in the GLP-1 receptor agonist group.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the raids targeted Retatrutide, Ozempic and Semaglutide products found to be marketed without proper control, including through online platforms.

He said 12 raids were conducted over the period involving Retatrutide, resulting in the seizure of 697 units worth RM341,000.

Retatrutide is not listed in the Health Ministry's formulary, he said, adding that its sale warranted scrutiny over the product's safety and efficacy.

A further seven raids targeted the illegal sale of Ozempic and Semaglutide, resulting in the seizure of 62 units worth RM64,170.

"The ministry, through its Pharmacy Enforcement Division, conducts routine monitoring and continuous enforcement through the detection and screening of advertisements, removal of advertisements from e-commerce platforms, investigation of complaints and raids on the sale of unregistered medicines.

"This is particularly important in the context of Ozempic, Mounjaro and similar products," he said when answering a supplementary question in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

Dzulkefly said the ministry would intensify monitoring and enforcement against the misuse of e-commerce and other online platforms to curb the illegal sale of medicines.

He said the measures were necessary to protect the safety and efficacy of health products used by the public. - November 2, 2026
