Doctors undoubtedly take on the most challenging and exhausting job known to mankind as they have to work long hours attending to and treating patients daily, often at the expense of their physical and mental health.
A local doctor recently called out the Ministry of Health (MOH) for treating its doctors poorly by providing meagre meals while they were on-call or have to work beyond their usual working hours.
Only bread & jam
In a Threads post, the OP showed a photo of a container which had several slices of white bread and a small packet of jam in it, which was provided to a doctor friend working at a hospital in KL.
In the caption, he wrote: “(Friend) A working in a public hospital in KL ranted to me saying: ‘Bro, see. This is how they treat us. Our breakfast in OT, few keping roti, jam x cukup, kena share share. Why can’t they provide food at least similar to patients?’“
The OP then juxtaposed it with another photo which showed the meal of another doctor friend, a Malaysian working at a hospital located overseas, where it featured a steamy cup of coffee, a glass of water, and a piece of pastry.
He added: “Meanwhile, friend B out of Malaysia sent to me and said: ‘Bro, this is what the clinic admin will prepare for me before starting the clinic.’“
Outrage
Netizens were horrified and angered by the stark contrast in meals provided to doctors working in and outside of Malaysia and criticised MOH for it.
‘KKM’s staff meal looks less like food and more like a government-funded reminder that doctors are disposable. Patients get proper meals; the people treating them get this culinary crime scene. After years of training, on-call nights and saving lives, apparently the grand reward is shit on a plastic tray and a reminder to ‘bersyukur’.’
‘Oh, my God. Why is MOH being so heartless? These doctors (are) fighting for saving lives and they’re given bread/dry biscuits only?’
Another commented that meals were considered a luxury 15 years ago as he personally was never provided a single meal, prompting the OP to reply with: “Kesian. (Pity)”
Meanwhile, a doctor expressed disbelief over the post, writing that he always assumed all hospitals would provided five meals for on-call and overtime (OT) doctors, just like how his hospital does.
