Kota Kinabalu: The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) has welcomed its formal acceptance into the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, describing it as a meaningful step towards strengthening unity among Sabah-based political parties.
Upko Deputy President Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin (pic) said the decision reflected confidence placed in the party following its application submitted on May 29.
He expressed appreciation to GRS Chairman and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the coalition leadership.
He said the development was not merely a political arrangement but part of broader efforts to unite local parties in advancing Sabah’s future and development agenda.
Mojuntin said the “Sabah First” principle was a commitment to prioritising the state’s interests through closer cooperation among local parties that understand the needs and aspirations of the people.
He added that the move was in line with the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which recognises Sabah as a founding partner in the Federation of Malaysia.
He also called for a more united and coordinated effort in defending the state’s rights and development priorities.
