Moment rare tornado swirls under violent supercell thunderstorm in France

A tornado towered over a French village, forming and swirling beneath a violent supercell thunderstorm in eyewitness footage captured on Monday (24 August).

The tornado struck the area around Pomas at about 5 p.m. local time, according to local press.

Video taken in Verzeille, south of the city of Carcassonne, by Denis Marechal shows the tornado forming as severe weather battered parts of Aude.

France’s meteorological administration issued an alert for thunderstorms in the department.

At least 26 people were injured, and around 2,800 households were without electricity after the storm caused significant damage to homes, authorities reported.
