Stanford University shared footage of Dr Deisseroth telling his two daughters and sons of his incredible achievement, as they embraced their father.
The 54-year-old professor shared the medicine prize with two researchers in Germany for their work in optogenetics, a field that combines light with genes to switch neurons on and off in living brains.
He took the call from the Nobel Assembly overnight, then asked for an hour-long break at 6:30am to make his children's school lunches and tell them the news.
