Moment would-be assassin opens fire on Mexican environmentalist at his home

A Mexican environmentalist has survived an assassination attempt captured on video.

Erik Saracho, a jaguar activist and journalist, was almost killed at his home in the western state of Nayarit on 11 March 2025, in what has been described as a targeted attack amid ongoing drug war violence in the country.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Mexican Center for Environmental Law (CEMDA), he said: “I told the hitman ‘good morning’, and at that moment he opened fire with a pistol.”

Saracho said he then pressed a panic button provided by the federal government after receiving previous threats, before undergoing medical help that saved his life.

He is the director of the Jaguar Alliance, an organisation dedicated to protecting the endangered species.
