Two years after completing my degree in Monash University Malaysia, I would say that it's the right choice for myself. Even before I graduated from college, I already applied to Monash and knew that was where I wanted to go. Here's why I chose Monash University!
Following my dad's footsteps
My dad graduated from Monash University Australia more than 40 years ago. He'd always shared that he had a great time as a student there, both in experience and in the quality of education he received. Word of mouth from a trusted friend or family is indeed very powerful, and this influenced me a lot in choosing which university I wanted to go to.
Famous for research & development
Monash University is known for research as they follow a lot on the steps of their Australian counterparts. As such, they have the latest equipment and expertise needed to conduct research. Even Sunway University sometimes come by to take a look at their equipment. Not only the equipment, they also have all the other expertise needed to support students interested in research, such as grant writing, project management and more. This is from my perspective as a science student, but the same goes for other educational streams as well.
Some lecturers are world-renowned
All my lecturers in the School of Science have vast experience in the field and have travelled to many countries to collect samples and raw data for their research. One of my lecturers participated in the 1000 Genomes Project, and another lecturer from another school was part of the legendary Human Genome Project. Even as lecturers, they still conduct research each year and take in students to work with them for a semester or longer. This gives students a great opportunity to learn and experience a real day in the life of a scientist or researcher, helping them to truly analyse the career options they have before embarking on a specialty.
Prestigious among local and international employers
Based on my personal experience, many employers give priority to students from Monash University (plus a few other universities). It's a good name that they prefer as they've usually had a few good-performing employees from Monash University, and is often regarded as one of the ‘gold-tier’ universities. An additional point is that the university holds their own career fair in-campus every year, helping students gain exposure to their preferred companies and giving employers a view into the culture of the students studying at Monash University.
Many study spaces and spacious hangout areas
Every year, Monash is always renovating some areas to enlarge and refurbish the spaces. In every floor of the university, there are study spaces just outside the classrooms. They also have a 3-storey library, a hangout-study space called The Hive, an extended cafeteria and even study benches around the foyer area. When it's time to chill, they have a student lounge that has dance rooms, PS4, pool tables, beanbags, a badminton court and I think the gym is there too. While these facilities were what I had back in 2022, they've most definitely added more facilities since then. Believe they now have more food options in the cafeteria, a new convenience store and study spaces are upgraded with better tech!
Like-minded coursemates & friends
Before coming to Monash University, the college I attended had a student pool that was more diverse - there are different types of people with much more different mindsets. I decided to enter Monash University because I realised that the people here are more like-minded with me, where we are regarded as a bit more studious, highly focused on the outcomes of our exams and very competitive with one another. A big bunch of my friends also made the same choice as me, so that affirmed my decision to pursue my degree at Monash University.
Scholarship
At the end of my college days, I was awarded the Monash High Achiever Award. It was not a full scholarship, but was still enough to cover one unit's fees each semester. A total of RM30,000 was saved thanks to the scholarship. This was a great savings for my parents and more effectively utilised for other expenses.
All in all, I don't have any regrets going to Monash University Malaysia. Though I did not pursue a career in science, the good habits and experienced I gained during my university years gave me a good head start into the corporate race, which I truly appreciated.
