TAWAU: Security forces are constantly monitoring all aspects, including threats from foreign elements, ahead of the State Election to ensure the democratic process runs smoothly.

Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Commander Datuk Victor Sanjos said these matters remain under constant observation.

“At present, no threats from foreign elements have been detected. However, security forces are always ready to address any issues that may arise during the upcoming State Election,” he said.

He was responding to reporters’ questions regarding Esscom’s planning and preparation as the security coordinator for the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) ahead of the State Election scheduled for this year.

Victor said Esscom maintains close cooperation with the armed forces, police, Maritime Enforcement Agency and other security units.

“What is most important now is that we, together with other security forces, will await further coordination when the time for the State Election arrives,” he said.

Victor confirmed his team’s readiness is at a robust level to ensure control and security, especially in the waters of the Esszone.

He urged all security forces to remain vigilant and exercise caution when taking any actions during the festive season.

“We remind our security force colleagues on duty to prioritise self-care and health while addressing any potential threats that may arise,” he said.

Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Esscom has proven itself in safeguarding the security and wellbeing of the community throughout its 12-year existence since April 1, 2013.

The record of zero kidnappings from January 15, 2020 until now stands as evidence of Esscom’s commitment to ensuring a more stable and secure environment in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone).

He said Esscom’s commitment, in line with its motto “No Day without Operations,” is further demonstrated by more than 5.2 million physical inspections of individuals, vehicles and boats conducted from January 1, 2020, to February 28 this year.

“As a result of these inspections 1,907 people were detained and 1,118 vehicles and boats were seized by authorities for various offenses,” he said.

Saifuddin said this in his speech read by Deputy Secretary-General (Security) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman, during Esscom’s Penerapan Nilai-Nilai Murni dan Ihya Ramadan Programme held at the Masjid Al-Falah Kampung Budaya Pasir Putih.

Saifuddin said Esscom’s commitment as the security operations coordinator in the Esszone has also resulted in a total of 1,890 illegal immigrants and 294 vessels or boats attempting to infiltrate national waters being successfully expelled by security forces.

“The total value of seizures for that period (since 2020) is RM90 million, with the highest seizures involving cases of smuggling controlled and untaxed goods amounting to RM55 million.

“Other items involving drugs and possessions of illegal immigrants that also contributed to the overall value of seizures are estimated at RM34.4 million.

“Looking at Esscom’s commitment, I believe we can build a more advanced and prosperous community, while ensuring the Esszone is a thriving place for all,” he said.

Additionally, he praised Esscom staff for their consistent commitment to ensuring security remains peaceful and controlled, especially in the Esszone.

He also urged the local community to establish close cooperation with the government and security forces to ensure continued security and peace.

On the programme, Saifuddin said the event is in appreciation of security personnel who serve to ensure the safety of Malaysians, particularly in the country’s border areas.

“Esscom not only acts as a coordinator in security control aspects but also strengthens close relationships with the people through community programs,” he said.
