Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah (KePKAS), officially launched Citra Budaya Kota Kinabalu – “KK Culture On Stage 2026”, a cultural showcase designed to highlight Sabah’s rich heritage in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and in preparation for Visit Sabah Year 2027.
The programme at Lintasan Deasoka would be held monthly featuring cultural performances and singing to attract tourists.
It was officiated by DBKK Mayor Dato’ Sri Dr Hj Sabin Samitah, representing Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department and Minister in charge of DBKK.
In his speech, read by the Mayor, Joniston emphasised the importance of preserving and presenting cultural heritage in fresh, creative, and accessible ways, ensuring its relevance for future generations while strengthening Sabah’s position as a world-class tourism destination.
Sabah, home to more than 30 ethnic groups living harmoniously, enjoys a diversity that has become the state’s identity and pride.
“Cultural heritage will only remain relevant if it is preserved, practiced, and presented to the current generation in fresh, creative, and accessible ways.
Culture is not merely a historical legacy, but an asset that can unite society, strengthen the state’s identity, and generate economic value through tourism and the creative industry,” he said.
The programme would consist of a series of cultural performances held regularly throughout Visit Malaysia Year 2026, before being expanded on a larger scale during Visit Sabah Year 2027.
Tourists would be offered authentic experiences from traditional food and cultural storytelling to artistic performances and direct interaction with local communities.
“This programme not only enriches the tourist experience but also creates opportunities for local artists, artisans, and community entrepreneurs to showcase their work.
It provides a platform to market local products and generates economic spillover that benefits the wider community,” said the Mayor.
The event also highlighted the state’s commitment in positioning culture as both a unifying force and an economic driver through tourism and the creative industry.
It echoed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aligning with six key areas: good health and well-being, gender equality, affordable clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, and partnerships for the goals.
