Monza president Silvio Berlusconi has defended his decision to sack coach Giovanni Stroppa.

Stroppa was dumped this week, despite leading Monza to promotion last season.

Former AC Milan owner Berlusconi said: "I have esteem and gratitude for Giovanni but Monza today has needs of an extra stimulus."

Monza have named Raffaele Palladino as interim coach as they seek a permanent replacement for Stroppa.

Claudio Ranieri and Roberto Donadoni have been linked with the job.
