Minister Hannah Yeoh says more surveillance and patrols are needed at KLCC to tackle unlicensed photographers and protect tourists from harassment.

KUALA LUMPUR: Additional closed-circuit television cameras will be installed around the Petronas Twin Towers area to combat the ‘photo touts’ syndicate.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hannah Yeoh said her office will discuss the matter with KLCC Property Holdings Berhad and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

“CCTVs are under the KLCC management. I will discuss with them, along with the DBKL, to see how we can install more CCTVs outside so that we can identify the faces of those conducting such business activities without permission,” she told reporters.

Her statement follows an incident where 18 unlicensed photographers allegedly attacked a man who tried to break up a fight with a foreign tourist last Sunday.

Yeoh also called for more frequent patrols by police and DBKL enforcement officers to prevent the issue from recurring.

“We do not want to see tourists and Malaysians being bullied because it also tarnishes the country’s name. Fights like that should not happen and an investigation is being conducted by the police. I urge the police to take action,” she said.

Police have detained the 18 individuals, aged between 17 and 45, for investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

Separately, Yeoh addressed an unrelated issue involving Federal Territory Residents’ Representative Council members.

She confirmed DBKL has filed a police report after a viral video allegedly showed MPP members soliciting money from a Wangsa Maju massage centre.

Yeoh clarified that MPP members are not enforcers and should only convey resident complaints to DBKL.

“There is no reason for MPP members to go down to the field because that is the jurisdiction of DBKL. The MPP listens to complaints and directs them to the DBKL. MPP members are not enforcers. That is clear,” she said.
