More details released after three die in suspected hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship

  • A Dutch couple and a German national have been confirmed dead amid a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship.
  • A 69-year-old British passenger is critically ill in intensive care in Johannesburg, South Africa, after testing positive for hantavirus, with five other passengers also falling ill.
  • Oceanwide Expeditions, the shipowner, confirmed the deaths and said that hantavirus has only been confirmed in the British man's case so far.
  • The Dutch man, 70, died on St Helena island, and the Dutch woman, 69, passed away in a Johannesburg hospital after being evacuated.
