The number of Malay pupils studying in Chinese vernacular primary schools (SJKC) has continued to rise, surpassing 41,000 as of May this year.
A total of 41,133 Malay pupils were enrolled in Chinese primary schools (SJKC) nationwide as of May 31, 2026, accounting for 9.01% of the total SJKC student population, according to the Education Ministry.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the figures reflect a steady increase in the number of Malay pupils choosing to study in Chinese vernacular schools.
Steady increase over the years
According to the ministry, 35,129 Malay pupils (6.99%) were enrolled in SJKCs in 2023. The number rose to 39,373 (8.03%) in 2024, before increasing to 40,035 (8.59%) in 2025 and reaching 41,133 (9.01%) this year.
Fadhlina disclosed the figures in a written parliamentary reply to Kangar MP Ismail Zukri, who requested data on the number and percentage of Malay pupils enrolled in Chinese and Tamil vernacular primary schools over the past five years.
Why more Malay parents are choosing SJKCs
While the Education Ministry did not specify the reasons behind the growing enrolment, a recent study by the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute found that many Malay parents are drawn to Chinese primary schools for their strong academic reputation, disciplined learning environment and opportunities for their children to learn Mandarin. The study also identified academic reputation as the most important factor influencing school choice, ranking ahead of language, school facilities and location.
Around 69% of respondents preferred SJKCs because of their academic reputation, location and discipline. It also noted that two-thirds of respondents would still choose an SJKC even if it only had basic facilities, suggesting that academic quality remains the top consideration for many parents.
Fewer Malay pupils in Tamil schools
The ministry also reported a slower increase in Malay enrolment at Tamil primary schools (SJKT).
As of May 31, 320 Malay pupils were studying in SJKTs nationwide, representing 0.41% of the total student population. The number stood at 227 (0.26%) in 2022, increasing to 241 (0.28%) in 2023, 288 (0.35%) in 2024, and 295 (0.37%) in 2025 before reaching the current figure.
