More than 300 natives left homeless after longhouse destroyed in fire

MORE than 300 natives have been left homeless in yet another devastating longhouse fire in Sarawak today.

The latest incident at about noon saw the very longhouse called Rumah Lapie, located in the  Sebauh district in northern Sarawak, razed to the ground.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in a press statement, said the department had received an emergency alert and deployed teams of fire fighters from Bintulu station to the site.

The longhouse stretching more than 400 feet long was already on fire when the teams arrived.

"There were more than 30 housing quarters built next to each other in the longhouse measuring more than 400 feet long and 200 feet wide.

"All the residents managed to escape the flames," said the department.

Those left homeless included the elderly and little children.
