Sir Keir Starmer’s former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney has been summoned to appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee of MPs next Tuesday amid the Peter Mandelson vetting scandal.
Mr McSweeney, widely regarded as a protege of Lord Mandelson, resigned in February over his part in the peer’s appointment to the Washington DC posting.
The political strategist will appear at the influential parliamentary committee next Tuesday, following an expected showing on Thursday morning by Cat Little, the most senior Cabinet Office civil servant.
Ms Little last week revealed to the Prime Minister that she had discovered Lord Mandelson had been granted high-level security clearance for his job as US ambassador despite vetting officials recommending against it.
Following Sir Olly's evidence, the Foreign Affairs Committee has today requested that Cat Little, Ian Collard, Sir Philip Barton and Morgan McSweeney attend and give evidence.
Cat Little will give evidence tomorrow at 9am.
Morgan McSweeney will attend Tuesday.
Their appearances follow evidence given by Sir Olly Robbins, the sacked Foreign Office civil service chief who appeared at the committee on Tuesday.
Writing on social media, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Dame Emily Thornberry said Sir Olly’s predecessor Sir Phillip Barton was also among those called to give evidence.
Dame Emily said: “Following Sir Olly’s evidence, the Foreign Affairs Committee has today requested that Cat Little, Ian Collard, Sir Philip Barton and Morgan McSweeney attend and give evidence.
“Cat Little will give evidence tomorrow at 9am.
