Deck cadet Aditya Sharma was among three seafarers killed in an oil tanker attack near Strait of Hormuz

The mortal remains of Aditya Sharma, a 23-year-old sailor from Hamirpur district who was killed in a missile strike on the oil tanker MT Settebello near the Strait of Hormuz on June 10, reached Hamirpur on Wednesday evening. Aditya, a native of Simlan-Da-Gran village in the Nadaun Assembly constituency, was among three Indian seafarers who lost their lives in the incident.

Aditya was serving as a deck cadet aboard the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Settebello when the vessel was struck off the coast of Oman. The tanker had 28 crew members on board, including 24 Indians. While 25 crew members were rescued, Aditya Sharma, Shivanand Chaurasia and Patnala Suresh were confirmed dead.

The body, which arrived late in the evening, has been kept at the mortuary of Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College and Hospital, Hamirpur. Deputy Commissioner Gandharva Rathore said since the remains reached late, they were placed in the mortuary and would be handed over to the family after a postmortem examination on Thursday morning.

Aditya was the only child of Ramesh Sharma and Sushma Sharma. Having joined the maritime service in November 2025, he was undergoing a 15-month training period at the time of the tragedy. His untimely death has cast a pall of gloom over the region.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who also represents Nadaun, expressed grief over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He described Aditya’s death as an irreparable loss and assured all possible assistance and support from the state government during this difficult time.
