A tragic incident unfolded today as a 44-year-old mother and her boyfriend appeared in court, facing charges related to the death of her five-year-old son. The young boy, believed to be a victim of abuse, lost his life under heartbreaking circumstances. Mary Teh May Yee and her boyfriend, S. Puraneswaran, aged 29, stood before Magistrate Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha as the charges were read out to them.

While they expressed their understanding of the accusations, no pleas were officially recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The incident in question took place on August 22 of this year, near Taman Puncak Jalil in Seri Kembangan. The couple stands accused of murdering the boy at approximately 12:55 a.m. Sadly, this is not the only charge they face. They also pleaded not guilty to making a false police report under Section 182 of the Penal Code. If convicted, this offense carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal, while the accused faced the court without legal representation. Shedding light on the tragic incident, Serdang District Police Chief ACP A.A. Anbalagan revealed that the boy was unconscious when he arrived at Serdang Hospital's Emergency Department but was declared dead at 12:50 a.m. on Saturday. Initially, reports indicated that the victim had been struck by a lorry. However, hospital examinations uncovered troubling evidence in the form of bruises and old wounds on the child's body, indicating a history of abuse. It is suspected that the boy endured assault and mistreatment in an apartment before being brought to the hospital.

Following their investigation, the police apprehended the boy's mother, aged 44, and her boyfriend, a 29-year-old lorry driver. Shockingly, it was discovered that the couple had filed a false police report, falsely attributing the boy's injuries to an accident involving a lorry. Compounding these tragic circumstances, both the mother and her boyfriend tested positive for drugs. The case serves as a grim reminder of the importance of protecting the well-being and safety of vulnerable children, highlighting the need for increased awareness and vigilance in preventing child abuse.
