A 38-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son were stabbed to death during sleep inside a house in the Govindpuri area in the wee hours of Thursday. The police suspect robbery as the motive behind the killings, an official said.
The deceased have been identified as Sharda Sahu, a homemaker, and her son, a Class VII student, they said.
The police said they received a PCR call regarding a murder at a residence in Gali No. 10, Govindpuri, Kalkaji, at the Govindpuri police station at 1:11 am on Thursday. After getting information, police teams, along with the SHO, ACP and other senior officers, rushed to the spot.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that complainant Vishnu Sahu, who works as a fruit and vegetable vendor in weekly markets, returned home around 12:30 am and found the front door latched from the outside. When he entered the house, he discovered the bodies of his wife and son with multiple stab wounds, a police officer said.
The police said inspection of the crime scene revealed that cash and jewellery were missing from almirahs inside the house.
Crime and forensic teams were called to inspect the spot. The police said a case under Sections 103 and 309(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered.
Police teams have been deployed to trace and apprehend the accused, the official said. Family members alleged that cash worth Rs 8-10 lakh was missing and demanded an immediate arrest of the accused.
Vishnu’s brother said, “My sister-in-law and her son were stabbed multiple times on the back and stomach. When my brother returned home, he found the house locked from the outside.”
“The moment he entered the house, he found blood everywhere. I got a call from my brother at 1 am. I immediately rushed to the spot and found both victims lying in a pool of blood. The police must investigate the case from every angle and arrest the accused at the earliest,” he told reporters.
Investigators suspect the accused may have been familiar with the family or had prior access to the house as there were no visible signs of forced entry, sources said.
Police teams are also examining CCTV footage from nearby lanes and questioning local residents, acquaintances and people known to the family to establish the sequence of events leading to the murders.
Police sources said the attackers might have entered the house when the woman and her son were alone. Senior officers said technical surveillance, CCTV analysis and interrogation of suspects were underway to identify those involved in the killings.
