THE Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has warned motorcycle convoy participants that obstructing traffic could result in legal action, including hefty fines and imprisonment.
Director of the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said those found guilty under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987 may face fines ranging from RM1,000 to RM5,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.
“Every group movement or convoy must be reported to JSPT for coordination purposes, to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
He added that motorcycle convoys without official security assistance from JSPT must comply fully with traffic laws.
“The use of escorts or marshals to control traffic during convoy movements is strictly prohibited,” he stated in a press release.
The warning follows the circulation of a viral video showing a group of motorcyclists travelling in convoy along a highway, escorted by individuals in yellow safety vests.
The incident is believed to have occurred at KM 285 of the North-South Expressway, southbound near Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, involving a convoy journeying from Kuala Lumpur to the southern region.
Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri emphasised the importance of road courtesy and mutual safety.
“All road users must practise tolerance and consideration to ensure smooth traffic flow and mutual safety,” he said.
He advised that slow-moving vehicles should remain in the left lane to avoid impeding faster traffic.
The public, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, are reminded to cooperate and comply with all traffic regulations, regardless of road type—be it highways, state roads or city streets. - July 10, 2025
