A MAN has been killed in a hit-and-run incident while assisting a stranded motorist along the East–West Highway in Gerik, highlighting the dangers faced by road users stopping on busy routes.
Gerik district police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said the incident occurred at approximately 5.15pm at Kilometre 2.6 of the highway when the victim had gone to help a friend whose Proton Saga had run out of fuel.
"The victim arrived at the location on a motorcycle to deliver petrol," he said in a statement.
"While refuelling the car at the right shoulder of the road, he was struck by an unidentified white vehicle travelling from Jeli towards Gerik," he added.
The victim was rushed to Gerik Hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead at 10.50pm. The 21-year-old driver of the Proton Saga was not injured in the incident.
Police have classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death, which carries a prison sentence of between five and ten years, as well as a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000.
