
A motorist was fined RM100 for throwing a traffic cone at another vehicle on the LDP, an incident captured in a viral video that stemmed from a lane dispute.
SHAH ALAM: A motorist was fined RM100 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for abusive behaviour after throwing a traffic cone at another vehicle in a viral road rage incident.
Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman imposed the fine on K. Kanapathi, 35, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
The lorry driver admitted to behaving in an insulting manner by uttering abusive words at a foreign man, Daniel Owen Flower, 54, with intent to provoke anger and disturb the peace.
He also threw a traffic cone at Daniel Owen’s car at the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) toll plaza at about 5.25 pm last Saturday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muaz Khawarizmi Azfar had sought an appropriate sentence as a lesson to the accused.
Lawyers Muhamad Saifullah Muhamad Azmi and M. Partiben pleaded for leniency, stating their client was a first offender with dependants, including two young children.
In mitigation, Muhamad Saifullah claimed the accused’s actions were triggered by the complainant showing his middle finger during the incident.
Before sentencing, Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq advised Kanapathi to control his emotions and exercise tolerance while driving.
Subang Jaya district police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said the suspect, from Kuala Lumpur, surrendered himself at the Subang Jaya district police headquarters yesterday morning.
Investigations found the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding when the suspect, driving a red Perodua Axia, attempted to enter a Touch ‘n Go lane and nearly grazed a Perodua Myvi driven by the foreigner.
The accused paid the RM100 fine immediately after the court’s ruling.
