The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has raised concerns over rice found at a landfill site in Temerloh, Pahang, stating that it is damaged and unfit for consumption. Following an investigation conducted by the Padi and Rice Authority (KPB) of the Temerloh branch, KPKM emphasized the seriousness of the issue and promptly initiated an inquiry, with the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning Corporation (SWCorp) also present at the scene. The incident occurred near Jalan Pintasan Rumpun Makmur-Gunung Senyum, Kuala Krau. KPKM stressed the importance of consulting KPB KPKM regarding any rice disposal activity and urged the public to refrain from speculation as the matter is under investigation in accordance with the Paddy and Rice Control Act 1994 (Act 522).
In a related development, Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said has admitted to being responsible for dumping large quantities of rice and other food items at the landfill site in Temerloh, Pahang. This admission follows the circulation of a video depicting piles of discarded food at the landfill site on social media platforms. In a statement issued on Friday (April 19), the former deputy home minister acknowledged that he had procured the items for his constituents during his tenure as Kuala Krau MP.
"I take full responsibility for the disposal of the items," Ismail stated.
He explained that complaints regarding a foul odor emanating from the food storage facility were received on April 5. Upon investigation, it was discovered that several dead rats were present in the storehouse, and the rice was contaminated with rice weevils. Consequently, some of the rice was distributed to poultry farmers, while the remainder was disposed of.
Ismail clarified that the food was not purchased using funds allocated by the federal or Pahang governments and was not intended for flood victims or allocated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"I regret the incident and take full responsibility. I apologize to everyone for my oversight in disposing of the items," Ismail expressed.
