Just the other day, I wished my varsity mate a happy 63rd birthday. My friend, who had enjoyed his singledom for almost his entire life, told me he was on a break. He was perched on a hill near our old varsity, just gazing into the horizon. With no offspring carrying his name, but a fulfilling close to 40 years of a successful career as a health provider, he just wanted to reflect and take stock.
I thought he had way passed the stage of having a midlife crisis on account of his age, so I asked him whether it was some kind of soul searching or an existential crisis. He was disillusioned with the way the practice of medicine is heading. He signed up for a calling to cure the incurable and to see the glee in the eyes of healed patients. What he sees now is himself as a spoke in the cogwheel of an industry that turns health into disease, gives it a name, and strong-arms health workers into playing ball.
In this Tamil movie, weirdly named '29 ', its protagonist is in a limbo too. Why 29? It is often described as a grey zone in which one may encounter a 'quarter-life crisis'. This is when one takes stock of his identity, purpose, career and relationships. He starts pondering what he has achieved thus far and what lies ahead in his life. This transition, moving from the third decade of life to the fourth, gives much anxiety and perhaps hopelessness. What happens next depends on his environment, his company, his previous personal investments and maybe a right partner.
Sathya, a 29-year-old from a poverty-stricken farming background, with no role models and the first in his family to obtain tertiary education, is in limbo. Not knowing where his life is heading, he has an identity crisis. He goes through a roller coaster of experiences with his friends, at work, and with the love of his life to fully understand his purpose.
