Let me tell you about Jana Nayagan like a regular guy who paid full ticket price for the first show of the day and walked out wondering if he just sat through a film or a 3-hour political party membership drive.
First, the drama before the drama. This thing was supposed to drop for Pongal on Jan 9, 2026. Did not happen. CBFC and the makers were doing tug of war over the censor cut, plus some leak showed up online like an uninvited relative. Somehow they patched it up, slapped an 'A' certificate on it, and threw it into theatres worldwide on July 23 and 24. By tomorrow evening Tamil Nadu will be talking. Half the tea kadai debates will be, “Is this cinema or political interference with Dolby sound?”
Now the film itself. Imagine taking Bhagavanth Kesari, dunking it in Tamil masala, sprinkling 30% Enthiran leftover wires, and adding a surprise Anniyan cameo when the writer probably dozed off. The remaining 20%? CGI that looks like it was rendered on your cousin’s overheating laptop from 2012.
Every second dialogue feels like a government scheme announcement. You half expect a TVK flag to pop up after the interval card. Vijay is not acting in theatres anymore, he is campaigning. The climax is not written for claps, it is written for votes. And that “last film” tag? Bro, we have seen this “last film” trick before. Chennai in May has better chances of snowfall than Vijay actually retiring.
The story decisions are wild. They flew to Africa, pick up random characters that exist only to look confused, yet somehow they speak chaste Tamil like they grew up in Madurai. Then the film cuts to real photos of suffering kids, runs them through cheap AI filters, and calls it “emotion.” I felt nothing except second-hand embarrassment and neck pain from the tonal whiplash.
One second Vijay is chopping a hand off, next cut he is a kilometer away posing with the sword like he unlocked a new skin in a game. Physics left the chat.
And the AI circus. They dig up M.G.R. sir, put words in his mouth, and parade dead leaders around like digital cheerleaders for TVK. At that point it stops being cinema and starts feeling like a WhatsApp forward with a 500 crore budget.
The robots show up for no reason, do nothing and leave. If you ask them “bro why are you here,” even they would not know. Editing looks like it was done during a power cut with the mouse battery dying. Songs? Cornier than the corn stall outside the theatre. When they try English lyrics, my soul left my body. “Lyricism” was clearly on leave that day.
Anything good? Sure, I am not heartless. One BGM track actually goes hard. Composer, take a bow. You carried this entire circus on your back. Mamitha’s action scenes are decent. At least someone knew how to throw a punch without looking at the camera. Camera work is okay when it stops tripping over itself. The end cameos are cute. And the climax robots move without making my eyes hurt. That is the full list. We are done.
Final score: 5 out of 10, and that 5 is just for the songs and that one BGM. Missed this film and slept well? You did not miss “cinema.” You’ll just missed a three-hour rally with dance breaks.
Vijay reportedly received between ₹220 crore and ₹275 crore (RM93.18 million – RM116.48 million) for Jana Nayagan. After watching this 500 crore bonfires, my respect for Vijay took an auto and left. This is not a movie. It is a master class in how to set a mountain of money on fire and call the smoke “political vision.”
