Rao Bahadur is a 2026 Telugu-language psychological dark comedy written, directed and edited by Venkatesh Maha. It stars Satyadev in the titular role, along with Vikas Muppala and Deepa Thomas. The film is presented by Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar under GMB Entertainment and produced by Anurag Reddy, Sharath Chandra, Chinta Gopalakrishna Reddy and Eshwaran Vijayaraghavan.
Set against a fading aristocracy, it's not your regular Telugu film. It mixes suspense, dark comedy and even a touch of magical realism.
And it seems like the audience got it. On IMDb, the film is sitting at a strong 8.4/10 rating from the 7.2 K users, which is huge for a film this experimental. That rating makes perfect sense once you watch it.
The first thing that hits you is how fresh the story feels. Venkatesh Maha doesn't follow the usual template at all. Yes, it sometimes feels like its taking a detour when you expect it to go straight, but it never loses you. It's one of those films that refuses to entertain you on command, and that's exactly why it ends up saying so much more.
It's funny, it's genuinely entertaining, but it also makes you think. There's no clear good or bad here, and that's the point. It's simply an experience. Underneath all the comedy and the weird, dream-like moments, there's a sharp social satire. It talks about mature societal themes, about inheritance, ego, and how we are all conditioned - without ever becoming preachy.
There's this standout "Conditioning" song sequence - brilliantly choreographed, with a fun cameo from Venkatesh Maha himself. On the surface it's entertaining, but if you sit with it, it makes you pause and think about how much of our lives are shaped by society without us even realizing it.
What holds everything together is the performances. Satyadev is phenomenal. Honestly, hats off to him. The dedication he shows in portraying Rao Bahadur - the vulnerability, the absurdity, the slowly cracking psyche - feels so natural and lived-in. You feel every emotion he wants you to feel.
The supporting cast is just as sincere. Even though there are only a limited number of characters, every single scene feels meaningful. No one is wasted. Deepa Thomas is good; though I felt her flashback portions went on a bit too long and stretched the runtime. Vikas Muppala and the little boy who appears in the film are unforgettable. The kid especially brings a lot of heart to the story.
Technically too, the film is very strong. The writing is thoughtful and carefully crafted - every dialogue feels like it's speaking directly to you. The costumes and makeup deserve a special mention; they perfectly capture that world of a dying aristocracy clinging to its past glory.
Some scenes are written so well that they stay with you long after the credits roll. The screenplay is engaging for the most part and is a welcome change from what we usually get.
Is it perfect? No. The duration is a bit long, and if you're going in expecting a non-stop laugh riot or a typical commercial entertainer, you will need a little patience. This film asks you to sit with it.
But if you do, it's rewarding. For me, this is easily one of the best Telugu films to come out in recent times. Visually engaging, technically sound, brilliantly acted, and thematically rich - Rao Bahadur fully deserves that high IMDb rating. Watch it with an open mind and a little patience; you will have a good laugh and a lot to think about afterwards.
