Scream 7 had one job - to continue one of the smartest horror franchises ever made. And that’s exactly why the disappointment hits harder than usual.
Let’s be clear, Scream works because it plays fair while still surprising you. Every film keeps you guessing. Sometimes there are two killers, sometimes more, sometimes they even turn on each other. But by the end, it always makes sense. The reveal connects back to the story, and more importantly, to Sidney Prescott.
This time… not quite.
For the first 50 minutes, the film is actually very good. Tense, sharp, and classic Scream. You start building theories, suspecting everyone, enjoying the ride. It feels like the franchise is in safe hands.
Then the reveal happens.
And suddenly, it feels like the writers pulled a random idea out of a hat. The killers have no real connection to Sidney, which is a first and not in a good way. For example, one of them casually mentions being an AI specialist who worked with Google, which sounds more like a LinkedIn flex than a motive.
And then there’s the attempt to bring back Stu Macher. At this point, as an audience, I was confused. The idea that he waited through six films to suddenly come back for revenge just feels ridiculous. Even by Scream standards, this stretches things too far.
It’s especially frustrating because past films, whether it was the original Scream or the more recent sequels, always made the madness feel believable within its own world. Here, it feels like leftover ideas stitched together without much thought.
Performance wise, Neve Campbell still holds her ground as Sidney. She does what she can. But surprisingly, Courteney Cox is given almost nothing to do. A complete waste of a character who used to matter.
Many critics have pointed out similar issues, that the film starts strong but loses direction in the final act, with a reveal that feels forced rather than earned. And that’s exactly it. The ending doesn’t just disappoint, it betrays the very thing that made Scream great.
A strong start, a weak payoff, and a twist that doesn’t stick the landing.
Totally unforgivable.
