We are always told that a mother's love has no boundaries and is beyond compare. We have been bombarded with pictures of mothers embracing their offspring, curled up to break the fall of debris in collapsing buildings. And we have seen mothers barging into burning buildings and icy-cold lakes to save their little ones.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have mothers who have done the opposite, unable to bear the burden of feeling empty brought on by the puerperium. The sudden plummeting of 'happy' hormones may lead vulnerable mothers to look at the newborns with contempt, the imp that took away their joy.
Then there are mothers who refuse to sever the umbilical cord that attaches to the newborn. These mothers feel they are the only ones who know their kids inside out. They may go so far as to gaslight them and even create an illness just to show how indispensable they are, like in Munchausen by proxy. Others meddle in their kids' married lives, essentially convinced that no one can do a better job than they can at managing their adult kids' day-to-day affairs.
This story explores a different bond of mother-son relationship; something akin to 'Bonnie &Clyde', only that they are not romantically linked, but linked through maternal-child bondage. The part where they commit crimes and swing from place to place seems somewhat similar. Unlike Ma Baker and the gang of sons who rob, they do not do such things. They just want to be together.
A lot of mystery surrounds a mother and her young son, a team that gets released from prison. Their backstory is not immediately known. The duo moves from town to town, leaving once their caretaker becomes too close or someone from their past resurfaces. In every town they land up in, they assume different identities. Even the son is resigned to this fact and plays the game well. She finally lands as a caretaker with a lonely lady whose children are overseas and have no plans to visit their mother anytime soon. Everything was going on fine. The son started school, and the lady made it clear that she did not want to be attached to anyone. Just then, a former inmate of the prison shows up, complicating everything.
An emotional movie that has an interesting storyline. The story is not told in a linear fashion, leaving viewers to piece it together. Even then, it may not be the right one. A mother-and-son team who just want to be together.
P.S. * "What's our new story?" was the often-repeated dialogue as the mother and son duo went into a new area to assume a new identity.
