Last week, I listed “The Odyssey” and “Dune: Part Three” among the films I am most excited about. I also am so interested in Emerald Fennel’s take on “Wuthering Heights.”
I will watch “The Sheep Detectives” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu” because they’ve lured me with intense cuteness.
Here’s the list, continued.
6. “Supergirl.” For superhero films, I can’t believe I’m more excited about “Supergirl” than “Avengers: Doomsday.” I like that James Gunn is having fun shepherding the DC movies. “House of Dragon’s” Milly Alcock is Kara Zor-El in an adaptation of the comic miniseries, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Actress/playwright Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay, “Cruella’s” Craig Gillespie is on board as director. Jason Momoa fans should be happy to see him back as Lobo.
Regarding “Avenger’s Doomsday,” it’s like cooking with too many ingredients. What do you like eating? Let’s all throw it in there! Plus, people keep getting resurrected. There are no serious stakes anymore.
7. “Masters of the Universe” looks like a lot of fun too. The cast includes Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela and Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms.
8. “The Drama.” I am curious about “The Drama” because it’s an A24 film, and because it’s one of three movies with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. I’m set to watch both, why not this? If their agents aren’t close friends who attend each other’s birthday parties, they should be by now.
9. “The Social Reckoning” is seen as a “companion piece” to 2010’s “The Social Network.” Social media thrives on division to make a profit. “Anora’s” Mikey Madison plays whistleblower Frances Haugen, Jeremy Strong is Mark Zuckerberg and Jeremy Allen White is the investigative reporter who gets Haugen’s story out.
Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for “The Social Network” (and “The Newsroom,” “A Few Good Men,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “The West Wing”), pens this one too. Now if only they announce Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross back for the soundtrack it’s even more incentive to go, after all, Nine Inch Nails’ 1989 album was called “Pretty Hate Machine,” which is what often describes Facebook. Check the comments section if you dare.
10. “Disclosure Day.” Steven Spielberg returns to his fascination with aliens making contact with his newest film, “Disclosure Day.” The main reason I’m watching though is the brilliant Josh O’Connor. Joining him in the cast are Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Wyatt Russell.
11. “Digger” is described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions” starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro Iñárritu who did “The Revenant” and “Birdman.” I’m intrigued.
12. “Werwulf.” Rounding out this list is “Werwulf,” the next Robert Eggers movie.
He and his regular players Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, Lily Rose Depp, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson take us to 13th century England for this gothic werewolf terrorizing a village tale. 2026 could be a very good year for movies.
