It's a rare sight to witness a Member of Parliament (MP) humbly apologizing in the Dewan Rakyat for a false statement, especially one that had already been retracted. Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan did just that yesterday (March 5), expressing regret for calling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim corrupt in the august house last week, a statement he had withdrawn upon instruction from the House Speaker.
Wan Saiful's apology may have been prompted by the threat of a six-month suspension from the Dewan Rakyat, as Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi had filed a motion to that effect. However, the motion was withdrawn following Wan Saiful's apology.
While he may have escaped suspension, this incident has undoubtedly tarnished Wan Saiful's reputation, as well as that of his party Bersatu and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
A former think-tanker, Wan Saiful was highly regarded for his intellect before entering politics. However, by making baseless accusations against the PM, he has stooped to gutter politics and sullied the Federal legislature in the process.
Despite this, Wan Saiful seemed to believe that retracting his statement was enough to rectify the situation, seemingly unaware of the damage he had caused to the reputation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA), the PM, and the Parliamentary institution.
The unity government has chosen not to pursue the matter further, focusing instead on more pressing concerns. However, this does not mean that Wan Saiful's actions should be overlooked.
It is imperative for Bersatu to take disciplinary action against Wan Saiful for bringing disrepute to the party. This could include suspending him internally for six months, sending a clear message that the party does not tolerate unprofessional conduct, especially dishonesty.
Such action would also demonstrate that Bersatu has zero tolerance for attempts to tarnish institutions like the royalty and the legislature, regardless of political affiliations.
Ultimately, suspending Wan Saiful would be more beneficial for Bersatu than attempting to have six rogue MPs who switched allegiance sacked from the party, as this would trigger costly by-elections.
These MPs switched allegiance to support Anwar, not for personal gain, but to secure more allocations for their constituents. Their actions, though controversial, demonstrate a commitment to their voters that is more honest than making baseless accusations for political gain.
In conclusion, Wan Saiful's apology in Parliament may have spared him from suspension, but it has not salvaged his reputation. It is now up to Bersatu to take decisive action to uphold integrity within its ranks and send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
