Several Members of Parliament (MP) have proposed measures to encourage public transport use, strengthen government revenue collection, and improve key sectors, during the Dewan Rakyat debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan.
Push for Tax Relief to Boost Public Transport Use
Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan urged the government to introduce tax relief for public transport users, saying it could encourage adoption across all income groups, including middle- and high-income earners.
He said such a measure would help Malaysia reach its target of 40% public transport usage by 2030, compared to the current rate of 20%. He also proposed setting annual targets for new bus acquisitions to improve service frequency and reliability.
Strengthening Revenue Through Better Governance
Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof recommended addressing tax leakages and refining subsidy allocations to increase government revenue without placing extra financial pressure on the public.
He said public-private partnerships and green financing could also play a role in supporting national development goals under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
Developing Malaysia’s Rare Earth Industry
Kemaman MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar called for the establishment of a National Centre of Excellence to drive the growth of Malaysia’s non-radioactive rare earth industry.
He highlighted the importance of investment in research and innovation, particularly in smart agriculture and renewable energy, while stressing the need for effective oversight in the spending of the 13th Malaysia Plan.
Calls for Reform in Pre-School Education and Fair Wages
Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad suggested consolidating all government pre-schools under the Education Ministry to improve coordination and policy implementation.
He also urged the government to address low wages among Pasti teachers, noting that some earn as little as RM600 to RM700 per month, and called for fairer remuneration in the sector.
