According to a source close to a party official, Bersatu MPs would swear allegiance to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim unless the opposition can demonstrate that it can quickly overthrow the government.

The anonymous party insider stated that Perikatan Nasional leaders needed to provide "solid proof" that this kind of coup was about to happen.

If not, the source stated, more Bersatu MPs will back Anwar's administration.

PN had stated that if it won large numbers of votes in six states in August of last year, it would be able to seize Putrajaya. At the Terengganu by-election for Kemaman, a similar assertion was made.

Following assertions by PN election director Sanusi Nor that the alliance had enough sworn pledges of support from MPs to allow a change of government, talk of overthrowing the unity government resurfaced.

“However, if we don't provide the opposition MPs with anything substantial, they will finally declare their support for Anwar. We feel like we have to move soon,” the source told FMT.

According to the source, there were rumors that a few more MPs were going to announce their support for Anwar shortly.

Six Bersatu MPs have supported Anwar thus far, citing their constituents' welfare as justification.

The six are Dr. Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang).

Syed Hussin asserted recently that additional Bersatu MPs would support Anwar before the February 26th meeting of Parliament.

Several Bersatu leaders, according to the source, were more concerned with the party polls that are anticipated to be held this year than with such a prospect. He claimed that certain prominent figures are keeping a low profile to hold onto their positions.

According to a different Bersatu senior, Muhyiddin Yassin's reversal on stepping down as president may have been the catalyst for some of the party's MPs to support the administration.

The leader stated, “After the party failed to form a government after the general election, some members were keen to have a new leader.”

There might not have been MPs endorsing Anwar if Muhyiddin had adhered to his first resolve to resign the position, he claimed. "The party needs a new leader to get it back on track because the MPs feel it is losing direction."

After talking to his wife, Muhyiddin changed his mind about stepping down as party leader, despite his announcement at the previous year's party conference.

Yesterday, Syed Hussin asserted that members were disappointed by Muhyiddin's U-turn.
