Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has confirmed that Tanjong Karang MP Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi and Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Syed Abdul Fasal had requested to move their seats away from the Opposition bloc voluntarily.

Responding to a query from Perikatan Nasional (PN) whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan in the Dewan Rakyat today (Feb 27), Johari stated, “Those who are not comfortable with their current seating position can put in a written request to me...I don't ask any questions.”

“I will not stop anyone from (asking to change) their seating positions. Whatever the reasons are, as long as they write to me, I can make a decision if it is applicable. There are also new MPs who have seniority within the party, and I entertain (such requests). I am open about this (seat changes).”

Zukafperi and Syed Abu Hussin are among the six Bersatu MPs who recently declared their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government. The other four are Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, and Labuan MP Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman.

According to the seating chart obtained from the Parliament website, Zulkafperi, Syed Abu Hussin, Zahari, Mohd Azizi, and Suhaili are now seated slightly apart from other PN members. Only Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain is still seated with other PN MPs.

The quartet is seated a row behind Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who previously withdrew his support for the unity government.

The seating changes come amidst political shifts within the Dewan Rakyat, with MPs realigning themselves in light of the evolving political landscape. The decision by these MPs to move away from the Opposition bloc reflects their support for the Prime Minister's unity government, signalling a potential realignment of political alliances within the parliament.

It is notable that these changes are occurring against the backdrop of Malaysia's political scene, which has seen several twists and turns in recent years. The formation of the unity government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim marked a significant development, bringing together MPs from various parties to address the country's challenges and steer it towards stability and progress.

The seating adjustments, while seemingly symbolic, can have broader implications for the functioning of the parliament and the dynamics between different political factions. As MPs position themselves strategically, the unity government may gain more support, enhancing its ability to implement its agenda and address key issues facing the nation.

Overall, the request by MPs to change their seats underscores the fluid nature of Malaysian politics and the ongoing realignment of political forces. It remains to be seen how these developments will impact the country's political landscape in the long run and whether they will contribute to greater political stability and unity.

The decision by these MPs to request seat changes also highlights the importance of individual agency within the political landscape. By exercising their right to change seats, these MPs are asserting their independence and aligning themselves with political movements that they believe will best serve their constituents and the nation as a whole.

Furthermore, the fact that the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat has openly stated his willingness to accommodate such requests demonstrates a commitment to fairness and inclusivity within the parliamentary process. This approach may help foster a more collaborative and constructive environment within the Dewan Rakyat, enabling MPs to work together more effectively towards common goals.

As Malaysia continues to navigate its political challenges and opportunities, the actions of individual MPs and the decisions they make will play a crucial role in shaping the country's future. The willingness of MPs to adapt to changing circumstances and align themselves with movements that reflect their values and priorities is a testament to the resilience and dynamism of Malaysia's political system.

In conclusion, while the request by MPs to change seats may seem like a simple administrative matter, it reflects deeper currents within Malaysian politics. By asserting their agency and aligning themselves with political movements that they believe in, these MPs are shaping the future of Malaysia's political landscape and contributing to the ongoing evolution of its democratic system.
