CYBERCRIME, the rising cost of living, and major changes to Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) domestic electricity billing system are among the central issues to be debated in Parliament today.
As outlined in the Order of Business on the Parliament portal, Chong Zhemin (PH–Kampar) will pose a question to the Home Minister regarding “the number of cybercrime cases reported throughout 2024” and the ministry’s initiatives to “improve the level of digital security of the people”.
Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN–Larut) will direct a question to the Finance Minister on strategies to “reduce the burden of the people's cost of living”, noting concerns over the national debt now standing at RM1.5 trillion. He will also seek the government’s response to the World Bank’s latest projection that Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth will slow to 3.9 per cent in 2025, alongside implications from reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States.
Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN–Kota Bharu) is expected to question the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation about TNB’s revised electricity billing structure, which eliminates tiered rates for domestic users. He will ask whether the “new mechanism would ensure cost fairness, energy efficiency, and maintain concentrated subsidies for the B40 and M40 groups”.
Elsewhere, Chong Chieng Jen (PH–Stampin) will raise a question with the Minister of Communications concerning digital accountability, asking whether platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Xiaohongshu are “held accountable to the victims of scams and fraudulent schemes” that are advertised on their sites.
Following the question-and-answer session, the Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025 will be tabled for their first readings.
The current sitting — the Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament — is scheduled to continue for 24 days. A key focus will be the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan on 31 July. - July 23, 2025
