DAP MP Syahredzan Johan calls for a boycott of US Embassy functions, citing economic damage from US tariffs and recent international conflict.

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has urged lawmakers, particularly backbenchers, to boycott events hosted by the US Embassy, citing the economic fallout of recent international developments.

Speaking in Parliament, he said last year’s US measures, including tariffs, have impacted Malaysia’s economy.

“Now with this war, it will certainly hurt our economy even more.”

He called on MPs to take a principled stand by refusing invitations to official embassy functions, including Independence Day celebrations, to signal that they cannot condone Washington’s actions.

“As backbenchers without government positions, we could make the statement clearly and peacefully. We don’t have to attend these events. Let’s show that we can no longer accept what they are doing.”

Syahredzan’s remarks came during a debate on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s ministerial statement on US-Israeli attacks on Iran which dominated the Dewan Rakyat session after the government tabled a motion condemning the offensive.

The motion follows reports that the strikes on Iran killed its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, drawing international attention.
