TAWAU: The Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) men’s team emerged champions in an inter-public agency volleyball tournament organised by Semporna Sports Complex.
The team defeated other teams in a two-day competition at the Tawau Basketball Arena, here.
Pride Team Tawau, who represented the Prisons Department, grabbed the second spot, while in third place were IPD Tawau and Semporna Education Office.
Other teams were from the Health Ministry and Sabah Sports Board.
Officiating the tournament, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, who is also Apas assemblyman, said the programme could contribute to the effort of building a sporting nation by promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“The activity is held with the hope of producing a balanced human capital, in terms of intellect, spirituality, emotion, physical and social through a participation in sports.”
To this end, he urged public servants to join any sports programmes to balance their social life. Sports programmes are good and in line with the country’s objectives of producing active and productive human capital.
“A consistent involvement in sports could produce an individual who is fitter, obedient, responsible and highly-disciplined,” he said.
He also hoped the tournament could be conducted frequently as healthy individuals can perform more efficiently.
