The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has assigned ratings to the eight reissued films in the “Harry Potter” franchise as well as several local and foreign movies scheduled for cinema screenings this week.
MTRCB Chairman and CEO Lala Sotto said the reissued “Harry Potter” films could again attract moviegoers of different ages, while emphasizing the role of parents in guiding children’s viewing choices.
“Before we even buy a ticket, let’s first check the MTRCB ratings of these films and make sure they are appropriate for our children’s age and level of understanding,” Sotto said.
Originally released from 2001 to 2011, the eight “Harry Potter” films received either a G (General Audience) or PG (Parental Guidance) rating from the agency.
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” received a G rating, indicating that it is suitable for all audiences.
The seven other films — “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” — were rated PG.
The Filipino comedy “Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa,” starring Jerald Napoles and Pepe Herrera, received an R-16 rating.
“Filipiñana,” a locally produced drama starring Jorrybell Agoto, Agot Isidro and Angeli Bayani, was rated PG and will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas.
The MTRCB said the film contains mature themes and “unsettling insights about a young woman’s workplace, the elite members and her own personal story.”
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” an adventure comedy based on the television series, received a G rating. The film features McKenna Grace, Fortune Feimster and Jennifer Hudson.
The agency also assigned PG and R-13 ratings to five other foreign-produced films.
“Meet Me at the Eclipse,” a Vietnamese film that will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas, was rated PG. It deals with mature emotional themes involving lost love, life-changing decisions and reconciliation “in a wholesome, reflective manner that is suitable for younger viewers with parental guidance.”
“A Southern Haunting,” which will be exclusively shown in Megaworld Cinemas, was rated PG. The film stars Beth Dover, Ato Essandoh, Dylan Baker, Merle Ackelson and Donovan Ailton and follows an ex-slave family attempting to uncover the truth behind their land.
“The Dog Stars,” a science fiction and action-adventure film that will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas, received an R-13 rating for its infrequent and non-graphic depictions of violence and suffering.
“Hope,” a South Korean science fiction thriller, was likewise rated R-13 because of scenes involving violence, peril, creature horror, alien elements and strong language.
The romantic comedy “One Night Only,” featuring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, also received an R-13 rating for discreet, infrequent, brief and non-graphic depictions of sexual activity.
Under the MTRCB’s classification system, a G or General Audience rating means a film is suitable for all ages. A PG or Parental Guidance rating means a parent or guardian should be present to supervise younger viewers.
An R-13 rating means a film is suitable for viewers aged 13 and older, while an R-16 rating is for those aged 16 and above. An R-18 rating is reserved for adult audiences.
