The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has released ratings for six films, which opened this week, helping moviegoers choose age-appropriate viewing for the weekend.
“Digger,” a black comedy starring Tom Cruise, Sophie Wilde, Jesse Plemons and Riz Ahmed, received an R-13 rating for “mature themes of dystopian society, moderate swear words and menacing language.”
MTRCB CEO and Chairman Lala Sotto urged parents to consider their children’s age and understanding when choosing films.
“Let us remember that it is important to ensure that the rating of the film we want to watch is appropriate for our children’s age and level of understanding. This will help us guide them properly in their viewing,” she said in Filipino.
She also welcomed this week’s Filipino release and encouraged audiences to support local cinema.
“Always Yours, Never Mine,” a romantic drama starring Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto, received a PG rating for themes requiring parental supervision and guidance for viewers younger than 13.
The Japanese anime “Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island,” featuring Haruka Aoki’s voice, also received a PG rating. Exclusive to SM Cinemas, it explores friendship, courage, greed, temptation and the risks of accepting attractive offers.
The MTRCB cautioned that children might imitate the characters’ adventurous behavior, although the story ultimately encourages caution, friendship and cooperation.
Three films received R-16 ratings.
“Verity,” starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordova and Brady Wagner, contains sustained psychological tension, disturbing violence, mature romance and sexual content, coarse language and themes of obsession, manipulation, trauma and family tragedy. The agency said these make the psychological thriller unsuitable for children and younger teens.
“Primetime,” a psychological crime thriller exclusive to SM Cinemas, stars Robert Pattinson, Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers, Matthew Maher and Bokeem Woodbine.
Set in 2006, it features Pattinson as journalist Chris Hansen, host of NBC’s “To Catch a Predator,” and examines television journalism, fame, exploitation and the ethical consequences of pursuing ratings through investigations involving suspected sexual predators.
Its advisories cover sexually explicit behavior and inappropriate encounters presented in an investigative context, rather than as sexual entertainment, alongside self-harm and suicidal behavior. The MTRCB warned against imitating its confrontational tactics and deception, stressing that criminal or sexual investigations should be left to trained authorities.
The 2023 Japanese horror-suspense film “My Mother’s Eyes,” exclusive to Megaworld Cinemas, stars Hisashi, Kosuke Hoshi and Takuma Izumi as it follows a mother and daughter involved in a traffic accident.
It explores family relationships, sacrifice, disability’s psychological effects and the ethics of experimental medical technology. The agency cautioned that its potentially disturbing ethical dilemmas, depression and suicidal thoughts require mature understanding.
A G rating means suitable for all ages; PG requires parental or guardian supervision for younger viewers. R-13 limits admission to viewers aged 13 and older, R-16 to those 16 and older, and R-18 to adults only.
