THE Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called on all its affiliates to support the campaign to abolish the RM1 interbank ATM withdrawal fee.
Its secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor said the campaign by the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) aims to raise awareness and garner public support on the issue and is currently ongoing - both physically and online.
“MTUC fully supports NUBE's call to abolish the fee, which is an additional burden, especially on low-income workers and particularly in rural areas or regions with limited access to a range of ATM services.
“The abolition of this fee will reflect the financial institutions' concern for the increasingly challenging economic situation faced by workers, who are the backbone of the country's economy, and will fulfil their social responsibility to society, " he said.
He urged all MTUC affiliates and Malaysians to support the efforts and dedication shown by NUBE by signing the petition to abolish the RM1 fee.
This campaign petition can be accessed online through NUBE's official website, Change.org as well as through field efforts where NUBE members will engage with the public nationwide.
The campaign seeks to gather one million signatures, and the petition will then be presented to the Finance Ministry to highlight the impact of this fee on the lower-income population in the country.
Established in 1949, MTUC is the largest and most prominent trade union federation in the country, advocating for better working conditions, fair wages, and labour laws. - January 8, 2025
