In a recent interview with Sinar Harian, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin opened up about the challenges he faced with Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad when he assumed office in 2020. Muhyiddin explained that Mahathir was disappointed and disagreed with some of the directions taken during Muhyiddin's tenure, adding, “but that was the reality.” This disconnect highlighted the differing perspectives between the two leaders, despite Muhyiddin’s respect for Mahathir’s vast experience.

Muhyiddin clarified that, as Prime Minister, he did not feel obligated to consult Mahathir on matters of governance. Citing his own experience in leadership roles, Muhyiddin emphasized that he was confident in his ability to steer the nation independently, especially during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I had enough support to form the government, and I didn’t need to refer to him or ask what should be done,” he stated, underscoring his sense of autonomy and ability to manage the crisis. Muhyiddin also noted that the scale of financial resources required to tackle the pandemic was unique, and he approached these responsibilities without Mahathir’s guidance, despite holding him in high regard.

Reflecting on Mahathir’s reaction to his appointment, Muhyiddin acknowledged Mahathir's public disappointment. Mahathir, just an hour before Muhyiddin’s swearing-in ceremony on March 1, 2020, expressed feeling “betrayed” by Muhyiddin, as he believed Muhyiddin had been working towards this leadership position for some time. Mahathir shared these sentiments during a press conference at Yayasan Al-Bukhary, indicating the depth of his discontent over the shift in political dynamics.

Despite these differences, Muhyiddin did at times seek out Mahathir’s insights, particularly on issues concerning the nation’s future and challenges facing the Malay community. “I went to see him because there were matters I wanted to hear his thoughts on, especially those concerning the Malays’ future,” Muhyiddin admitted. While he valued Mahathir’s perspectives, he noted that he managed the core responsibilities of his office independently, motivated by his understanding of the situation rather than any directive from his predecessor.

Mahathir has recently voiced disappointment that his successors, including Muhyiddin, were often reluctant to heed his advice. He expressed frustration over what he perceives as an unwillingness from Malaysia’s newer leadership to incorporate his views, though he claims his intentions were to benefit the country. Muhyiddin, however, defended his decisions, suggesting that his leadership style differed from Mahathir’s and that he believed he was capable of handling Malaysia’s unique circumstances without extensive consultation.

Muhyiddin’s reflections reveal a complex relationship with Mahathir—one marked by mutual respect but also significant ideological and operational differences. His time as Prime Minister underscored these contrasts, particularly as he navigated the uncharted territory of a global pandemic. This divergence in approach between the two leaders remains a point of interest in Malaysian politics, especially as the public continues to evaluate their respective legacies and impact on the nation’s future.
