Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, the Member of Parliament for Indera Mahkota, has called for the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Bersatu president, asserting that the former prime minister no longer demonstrates the leadership qualities he once embodied.
In an interview with Berita Harian, Saifuddin stated that Muhyiddin had lost the composure, wisdom, and skill that once defined his leadership. He claimed that the party had suffered from a lack of direction and transparency, with the Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) rarely convening under Muhyiddin’s watch. According to him, such inaction has left members frustrated and the party’s decision-making process paralysed.
Saifuddin further alleged that the Bersatu president had failed to manage internal matters effectively. Using a pointed analogy, he remarked that if Muhyiddin was unable to locate his own son-in-law, it was unsurprising that he struggled to maintain control of the party.
The former foreign minister did not limit his criticism to Muhyiddin alone. He also urged two senior Bersatu leaders — Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz — to resign from their positions.
Saifuddin questioned Azmin’s credibility as secretary-general, pointing to two ongoing issues that, in his view, had tainted the latter’s image. One involved a long-standing video controversy, while the other related to what he described as autocratic tendencies. He claimed Azmin had recently issued a directive that reflected an overly authoritarian approach, undermining internal democracy within the party.
Turning his attention to Bersatu’s information chief, Saifuddin criticised Tun Faisal for failing to perform his duties responsibly. Instead of disseminating accurate information and uniting members, Faisal was accused of acting as a provocateur, allegedly using internal platforms to stir division. Saifuddin claimed that many division leaders shared similar frustrations about his conduct.
He stressed that his appeal for leadership change was not an act of rebellion but a necessary intervention to prevent further decline within the party. According to him, the call for accountability stemmed from a desire to preserve Bersatu’s integrity rather than to harm it.
The statement marks a significant escalation of internal dissent within Bersatu, reflecting growing unease among party members over the direction and credibility of its leadership.
