KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has lodged a formal appeal with the Federal Court, challenging the recently reinstated charges of power abuse.
The appeal, submitted yesterday through his legal representatives, Messrs Jethwani & Co, is in response to the Court of Appeal's decision.
However, the apex court will have to grant him leave before his appeal can be heard.
On February 28, the appellate court overturned the high court's acquittal on the four charges.
Judge Datuk Hadhariah Syed Ismail, who delivered the three-member bench's unanimous decision, ruled that the high court erred in acquitting the former prime minister.
Muhyiddin faced four power abuse charges and three money laundering charges last year. On August 15, he was initially acquitted of the power abuse charges by high court judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin, who ruled that the charges were defective.
Judge Jamil further asserted that the unclear charges might prejudice Muhyiddin's ability to prepare a proper defence. – March 1, 2024
