Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has delivered a sharp rebuke to the unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, asserting that the recent fatal stabbing of a female student by her male schoolmate at a Bandar Utama secondary school reflects a total breakdown in the nation’s education and governance systems.

The tragedy, which has sparked widespread grief and outrage, has reignited debate over the safety and welfare of students in Malaysian schools. Muhyiddin said the incident represented a profound moral and systemic failure, arguing that both the government and the Ministry of Education (MOE) have neglected their duty to protect children under their care.

He said the country’s education system, once regarded as a safeguard for the young, has instead become a reflection of institutional decay, with violence and bullying in schools becoming alarmingly common. He accused the current administration of offering sympathy rather than solutions, noting that despite its public commitment to values such as compassion and respect, the government has failed to guarantee even the most basic level of safety for students.

The former prime minister urged the government not to treat the case as an isolated tragedy, but as a warning sign of systemic weaknesses in school management and policy enforcement. He said it was time for the Ministry of Education to accept responsibility rather than issue statements of condolence.

To address the crisis, Muhyiddin proposed four immediate measures. First, he called for the establishment of an independent investigation committee to uncover the root causes of school-based violence and evaluate long-standing safety lapses. Second, he recommended the installation of CCTV cameras in critical areas of schools, regular security patrols, and close coordination with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Third, he urged the introduction of psychosocial screening and early intervention programs for students displaying signs of aggression, stress, or emotional instability. Lastly, he said all teachers and school staff should undergo compulsory training in safety protocols and crisis management.

He concluded by urging the education minister and other government leaders to visit the affected school in person as a demonstration of commitment to reform. Every loss of life in a school, he said, stands as undeniable proof of failed policies, weak leadership, and moral negligence — a failure, he stressed, that the government must no longer ignore.
