In a statement, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the chairman of PERIKATAN Nasional (PN), criticizes Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for prioritizing the suppression of his political opponents over addressing the pressing issues faced by the people of Malaysia.
Muhyiddin highlights some concerning economic indicators, including the falling value of the Ringgit, which reached its lowest point in 26 years against the US dollar. He also mentions that Malaysia's GDP growth for the period fell short of projections, reaching only 3.8% instead of the projected 4-5%. Additionally, he notes that total trade has been declining for ten consecutive months, with a 4.3% drop in December compared to the previous year.
According to Muhyiddin, these are the realities faced by the people, and he believes that the government should prioritize finding comprehensive solutions to these issues. However, he accuses the prime minister of being more focused on suppressing political rivals rather than addressing people's concerns. Muhyiddin further expresses concern about the impact of increased taxes on Malaysians' wallets. He mentions the 2% hike in the sales and services tax (SST) to 8%, a new luxury tax of 5% to 10%, and a 10% sales tax on low-value goods sold online.
He believes that the government's pride in decreasing inflation is meaningless as it is a result of weak consumer demand and declining purchasing power. Furthermore, Muhyiddin criticizes the government for ignoring complaints about the persistent shortage of local rice in the market. Despite the expectation that 70% of rice supply in stores should be local, he claims that people are still struggling to find local rice in several locations.
Overall, Muhyiddin's statement reflects his disappointment with the current government's focus on political rivalries rather than addressing pressing issues faced by the people, such as the economic challenges, increased taxes, and shortages in the market. The tone of his statement indicates frustration and concern for the well-being of the Malaysian population.
