PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has said he is prepared to retire from politics after the next general election (GE15).

When asked if he would contest in GE15, the 75-year-old former prime minister said he will, if that is what the party’s grassroots want.

However, Muhyiddin, who is also the National Recovery Council (MPN) chairman, said that this is likely to be the last time he will be standing in an election.

“This might be my last term. After that, I’ll just rest at home with my wife, grandchildren,” he said at a dialogue session in Kuala Terengganu today.

The Perikatan Nasional chairman said the time had possibly come for him to retire, but it also depended on the circumstances.

The Pagoh MP added that he was thankful for his health, having recovered from cancer, adding that if he can hit a golf ball a distance of 200 metres, then he could still serve the nation.

In 2018, Muhyiddin was diagnosed with Stage 1 pancreatic cancer. He underwent an operation to remove the cancer and chemotherapy.

Muhyiddin was Malaysia’s eighth prime minister following the infamous Sheraton Move, which brought down the Pakatan Harapan administration after a mere 22 months in power.

Last August, Muhyiddin resigned from his post as prime minister after immense pressure from Umno and other opposition parties demanding that he do so.
